Designer Jana Robertson of Roberts & Lamb doesn’t shy away from a challenge. This lot in Salt Lake City’s Carrigan Canyon had previously been dubbed “unbuildable,” featuring a cramped footprint backing up to a steep slope. As demonstrated in our feature story, Site Inspired, Robertson teamed with Michaelis Build and Development and Studio PK, implementing clever construction, clean lines and natural materials to create a mountain modern sanctuary.

Ann Sacks tile welcomes guests at the home’s entry. Nearby, a natural oak bench niche wrapped in Wolf-Gordon wallcovering acts as a soft landing place. Across the foyer, a sculptural Visual Comfort sconce illuminates a mirror and custom floating shelf. “A mirror is essential in any entry,” says Robertson. “After all, everyone appreciates a final check before heading out.”

A striking visual hero of the main living area, a columnar fireplace stands clad in natural stone tile from Arizona Tile, featuring organic edges and a glossy finish.

An airy dining area sits nestled in one corner of the living area’s open concept. Robertson worked with Old Biscayne Designs to craft a custom table in a natural wood tone that harmonizes with the home’s flooring and exposed beams. Custom chairs by Adriana Hoyos.

The home’s irregularly-shaped lot posed challenges in more ways than just architecture. On the lower level, the floorplan required less square footage in guest bedrooms, leaving the designer little room for traditionally-paired nightstands. Rather than attempting an unnatural squeeze, Robertson leaned into the asymmetry: on one side, side tables from Four Hands deliver the requisite weight and storage to the bedside. On the other, a carefully engineered floating shelf and integrated sconce fill the narrow space between bed frame and wall, providing the needed landing place for personal items. In another guest room, Robertson embraces asymmetrical elements once again with innovative lighting: a lengthy pendant illuminates the nightstand on the interior side, while a shapely lamp on the other table makes for a cozy vignette framed by an exterior window. Custom pillows by Kravet.

The mountain modern aesthetic carries seamlessly into the guest bathroom. Ann Sacks Terrazzo tile grounds the floor, while rift-cut white oak cabinetry pairs beautifully with granite countertops and colorful Heath Tile. “The Heath Tiles are my personal favorite,” Robertson says. “The homeowners fell so in love with in, that they sopped by the Heath studio while on a trip to California to hand-select their colors.” For this space, they landed on the shades ‘Oat’ and ‘Geyser Green.’ The sconces are by Arteriors.
