The desirability of resort towns presents challenges for working people to be able to live close to their jobs and be part of their community. Park City has wrestled with the issue of affordable housing for a long time, well before many other communities have faced the issue.
Park City’s Silver Creek area is opening up new opportunities both for affordable and market-rate housing just on the east side of Highway 40. Elliott Workgroup designed a three-story complex for affordable living that is just now ready for residents. In the photo above, there is covered parking to the rear of the building.
These Silver Creek residences have a full-sized galley kitchen in an open plan with both counter seating and a dining area.
The living area has plenty of natural light and a patio. The electric fireplace provides a surprising amount of warmth, as well as winter cheer only a fire can provide. In the hallway are a bedroom, bath and laundry, and at the end of the hallway is a master with its own bathroom. Thought was given to plenty of storage, as well.
New buildings are starting construction, and while the area is not yet built out, it soon it will be a vibrant neighborhood. Already there are parks and bus shelters. I came to Park City in its early days when young workers filled the town skiing together and holding potlucks and parties, and it saddens me that the lifestyle I enjoyed is no longer a possibility to everyone. On the other hand, it pleases me to see affordable housing being built with so much care to aesthetics and quality of life. To me, it shows respect and appreciation. Where would we be without all the people who do the work?
