“Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.”  – Albert Camus

Summer may be the darling of many gardening enthusiasts, but autumn has more than its fair share of fans. They know well-designed fall landscapes can be just as spectacular as those those that thrive in the thick of summer. Autumn’s crisp days give gardens a final show that puts the spotlight on vibrant late bloomers and richly colored foliage. What’s more, the season offers the opportunity to plan and plant next spring’s eagerly anticipated blossoms.

Red Butte Garden enthusiastically applauds autumn and invites you to join them as they celebrate Utah’s fabulous fall season. They offer a fall plant sale, workshops and classes, garden design inspiration and, of course, the annual Garden After Dark party.

Fall is the season to plant for the future. Spring bulbs and ornamental grasses require fall planting. Check out the Red Butte Garden Fall Bulb and Native Plant Sale on Sept. 29 from 1-7:30 p.m. and Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.

The vibrant blooms of summer may be slowly fading but the vibrant blades of ornamental grasses provide plenty of eye-catching color for an autumn landscape. Fill in empty landscape spots quickly, add height and texture and create garden wow that lasts until the first snowflakes fall. Red Butte Garden has a collection of grasses that look their best in fall’s warm sunlight. Find Heavy Metal, Blond Ambition, Naked Sedge, Zebra Grass and more in the Garden. Purchase ornamental grass at the Fall Plant Sale.

Every kid (and kid at heart) loves October’s month-long fantasy of costumes and games. The Garden’s annual Garden After Dark event has become a fun-loving tradition. This year, the theme is Adventures in Wonderland. Bring your kids and dress in costume. There will be a food truck, Rocky Mountain Chocolates, and light-up toys to purchase. The nights will be filled with plenty of adventure and crafts perfect for kids, teenagers, parents and grandparents as well.

It’s never to old to learn new skills. Red Butte’s adult Workshops and Classes are perfect for those with green thumbs as well as those who are just digging into garden love. One of the most exciting classes is the Living Wreath Workshop on Sept. 16th . Once you learn these twining and decorating skills, your front door will forever be adorned every season in style. And in today’s age of Instagram and iPhone photo sharing, the Photographing Flowers Outdoors on Sept. 30 is perfect way to learn how to truly capture fabulous floral images.
