In St. George, Utah, the dramatic backdrop of volcanic lava fields and red rock formations inspired the design and details of a stunning desert retreat showcased in our feature Molten Oasis. Designer Julia Roberts, principal of HüGA Home, collaborated with Split Rock Custom Homes and Urban Design Group to bring to life a newly built desert contemporary residence in the Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club. The design team embraced the concept of “desert harmony” while fulfilling their clients’ desire for a relaxed and stylish haven where family and friends can gather and enjoy vacations together. Here, we showcase additional photographs that extend beyond the print feature, providing an even deeper glimpse into this remarkable project and its otherworldly setting. Photos by Jesse Garrett
Walls of floor-to-ceiling glass in the bedroom frame sweeping desert vistas, seamlessly blending the luxurious interior with the breathtaking natural beauty outside. A neutral color palette keeps the focus on the dramatic scenery.
At sunset, the rear of the home glows, with illuminated interiors, a striking outdoor staircase and multiple fire features. The layered elevations of the exterior architecture are designed to harmonize with the desert terrain, offering uninterrupted views that enhance the home’s integration with its surroundings.
The great room centers around a two-sided Mason-Lite fireplace, wrapped in Neolith porcelain basalt panels and complemented by artist-commissioned plaster finishes. Low-profile furniture ensures the expansive desert views remain the star, while timeless seating from Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin pairs beautifully with natural wood pieces by Taracea.
The dining room features a bespoke cantilevered table crafted from metal and wood, positioned beneath two rectilinear chandeliers by Palecek inspired by nature. Velleren dining chairs, upholstered in pin-tucked boucle fabric, add texture and elegance to the space.
The exterior architecture and landscape elements were thoughtfully created to complement the desert setting. “The patio staircase mirrors the prehistoric lava flows, with a waterfall cascading from the upper patio to the lower,” says architect Joel Bringhurst of Urban Design Group, reflecting the site’s unique geology.
A custom Caribbean Island Marble trough sink, backlit with Evo-lite panels, transforms the powder room into a dynamic space with a range of moods from bright to intimate. A patterned floor further enhances the room’s distinctive aesthetic.
Dimensional wall tiles and open shelving bring depth and elegance to the kitchen’s design. Sleek lines and an earthy color palette harmonize with the surrounding landscape, while honed Mont Blanc countertops offer both beauty and practicality.
A skylight highlights the textured treatment and artwork on the entry’s feature wall, while the staircase features warm wood treads and glass-and-metal railings for a contemporary yet inviting look. A multi-light pendant serves as a striking artistic focal point in the space. Stairs crafted by Titan Stairs.
A dramatic backlit resin headboard wall doubles as a private hallway to the owner’s workspace, creating a functional yet artistic centerpiece. Julia Roberts of HüGA Homes calls it “a meticulous collaboration with Tecnografica of Italy,” brought to life by skilled artisans and electricians.
The home’s tiered elevations offer breathtaking views of Snow Canyon State Park, White Rocks Amphitheater, and Entrada Country Club. Partner Bart Smith of Split Rock notes, “This unique lot required precise excavation to preserve a front grotto while optimizing the views from every level.”
Challenging lava rock formations became a defining feature of the site. Architect Joel Bringhurst explains, “A natural basalt cleft inspired the design, connecting the two-tiered site and giving purpose to the home’s layout.” He fashioned an illuminated outdoor staircase to connect the home’s upper and lower patio areas.
The upper patio offers a pool with a Baja shelf, a hot tub, fire pit, lounge areas, and a full outdoor kitchen with a Gloster dining table and Bianco Ceramic pumice tabletop. Expansive glass walls open the interior to lush garden views and abundant natural light.
The lower-level playroom features a mix of entertainment options, including a playhouse, ping pong, arcade games, and a gaming station, with direct access to the cascading waterfall and glass-railed staircase outside.
