Inspiration, it is said, can come from the most surprising places. When designers Kimberly Rasmussen and Elizabeth Wixom Johnsen of Establish Design were asked by the owners of this Millcreek-area home to help determine its design aesthetic, they suggested using the husband’s Scottish heritage to guide their selections and artfully curated details. As illustrated by our feature story Great Scott, the results are spectacular. So much of this was captured in the printed story, and the following images showcase even more of home, charming in every way.
A large limestone fireplace mantle from Establish Design’s Heritage Collection echoes the limestone encasement of the front door. Opposite the fireplace, a sofa is positioned in front of a gallery wall adorned with family portraits and oil paintings of Scottish landscapes. The windows are deeply set into the walls, creating a slanted light channel.
To infuse a sense of British heritage into the existing symmetrical structure, designers Kimberly Rasmussen and Elizabeth Wixom Johnsen incorporated several distinctive elements. They added a parapet wall to frame the garage, detailed the front door with a limestone surround and painted the exterior brick in Establish Design’s Chamomile hue. To further enhance the British country home aesthetic, they included rafter tails in the fascia and soffit, creating a decorative pattern along the roofline.
The designers furnished the rooms with traditional yet plush and comfortable pieces, and anchored the space with fumed oak floors. A palette of green, gray and creamy white sets the tone.
The stunning butler’s pantry, painted in Establish Design’s Scottish Highlands hue, offers additional kitchen workspace and ample storage for platters, trays and dishes. Inspired by British country homes, this space features a classic checkerboard floor, soapstone countertops, Roman shades and a classic checkerboard floor.
Johnsen and Rasmussen added a convenient and handsomely-accented wet bar to the large kitchen. It evokes the intimate ambiance of a cheerful British pub and is centrally located for drink service or for use as an additional buffet area.
Upholstered in a green wool fabric, a tufted banquette anchors the kitchen’s cozy dining nook—an ideal spot for the owners to casually enjoy breakfast or read a newspaper, designer Kimberly Rasmussen says.
A butler’s pantry offers extra kitchen storage and workspace while also serving as the home’s back entry.
The staircase is located off the entry and boasts an elegant iron railing accented with brass ball details. Creamy walls, painted in Establish Design’s Plaster hue, offer the perfect backdrop for pieces of the owners’ collected artwork, curated by Emi & Co.
Painted in Establish Design’s Scottish Highlands hue, the handsome library is located off the entry and is home to an antique writer’s table.
A children’s bedroom headboard connects two full beds. It is accented with reading lights and cushioned with pillows tied onto brass hooks.
A new pergola shades a freshly fashioned gathering area on one end of the home.
Artfully curated vignettes fill the home. In this bedroom, for example, two small paintings hang above a small bedside table draped with a custom pleated skirt.
Antiques and framed art foster a sense of timelessness that elevates the decor.
Hand-painted tile, marble countertops and under-sink draperies are among the details that fill this charming function-forward space.
