More to See: A Warm Welcome

How do you make a modern home feel comfortable and cozy, without losing its minimalist-leaning, clean-lined spirit? In a new Lehi home, designer Allison Campbell faced this dilemma head on, as showcased in our feature A Warm Welcome. The following outtakes from the story showcase how Campbell harnessed the power of natural materials, warm neutral tones and edited layers to help make this modern dwelling feel compelling and comfortable.

Medium-toned, white oak floors ground the main level’s open great room. There, designer Allison Campbell conceived a harmonious color palette featuring tones of putty, camel, cream buff and warm gray. A mix of textiles, leather and woods deliver texture and dimension that enliven the neutral palette.  A floating steel staircase leads to the lower level and boasts thick, white oak treads, glass railings and a striking, multi-pendant chandelier. 

A large, pivot-hinged steel door welcomes visitors into the home. Glass sidelights and transoms are integrated into a broad opening that is 11 feet high and 13 feet wide. A pair of large mirrors reflect light and views flooding the spacious area. 

Campbell sheathed the great room’s enormous fireplace with dark plaster and adorned its oversized firebox with an asymmetrical hearth and mantel crafted of quartzite. Open shelves flank the large-scale feature, adding depth and display space. 

Campbell chose curvaceous leather chairs to surround the dining area’s linear RH table. Introducing rounded forms helps to offset and relax the decor’s straight lines and sharp angles. 

Floor-to-ceiling windows separate the main-level office from the home’s open entry. Custom angled shelving performs as a strong focal point that contrasts with the room’s dark walls. 

An oversized window backs the kitchen sink, allowing the homeowners to relish the views while working in the room. Outside, a deep overhang helps shade the window and features a wood-clad soffit that visually links to the interior’s wood elements.  

In the stylish butler’s pantry, a dog door is located below the window and allows the owners’ two weimaraners to enter and exit with ease. Nearby, a roll-out cabinet features bins that contains dog food and eases the task of feeding the large dogs. The pantry hosts a sink, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, water-bottle filler and loads of storage for food and dinnerware. 

To differentiate the guest suite from the nearby primary suite, Campbell painted the headboard wall black and created a backdrop to the headboard from 1-inch white oak slats. A large, leaning floor mirror mimics the shape of the room’s windows and reflects the dark feature wall from across the room.  

In the primary bedroom, Campbell unifies the bed, bedding furniture and decor with layers of textiles and materials of the same color in varied shades and textures. “The palette is very pleasing and timeless,” she says. Custom art flanks the bed on each side, adding another subtle-yet-striking element to the understated design.  

The primary bathroom boasts twin floating vanities that flank the Native Trails concrete tub. Grasscloth dresses the vanity wall, as do frameless mirrors teamed with elegant wall sconces. Nearby, the glass-walled shower features two shower niches, a full-length bench and large-scale flooring tile that suits the spacious room. A pocket door opens to a customized dressing room/closet. 

The primary suite’s closet is furnished with custom cabinetry and hanging compartments. Integrated laundry adds to the stylish room’s function-forward design.
