Who doesn’t love a brilliant before-and-after story? Nobody, that’s who. So when designer Anne-Marie Barton showed us her chic overhaul of a tired Salt Lake valley home, we jumped at the opportunity to feature it in our magazine. The best part: We have more shots than we could fit in the Opposites Attract story, so here are more to see and relish.

Designer Anne-Marie Barton furnished the great room living area with large, inviting furnishings that complement the audaciously designed fireplace. Custom velvet sectional by Flex Form, swivel chairs by Coupe D’Etat and arched floor lamp from Gregorious /Pineo.
Barton catches up on calls while sitting in the freshly overhauled open kitchen. There, a custom hood and open shelves crown a gleaming Ilve range/oven. Taj Mahal quartzite and cabinets painted a warm, light-toned gray provide a serene backdrop for the inviting space.
Sparkling open shelves repeat throughout the kitchen, adding easy-access storage and display space without the bulk of upper cabinets, which are used sparingly in the space. “The shelves open the space and don’t crowd the custom hood,” Barton says.
“We bonded the minute she mentioned crystals,” says Barton, describing her meeting with the homeowner. In the main-level dressing room, Barton hung spectacular crystal lighting to illuminate the glass-topped jewelry dresser below. “As a custom dressing room, we wanted to put her vintage jewelry on display,” Barton explains. “It’s like a piece of art,” says Barton, describing the bedroom’s floor-to-ceiling, two-sided fireplace she clad in two natural stones that she separated by a horizontal band of bronze.
The powder room is a show stopper, Barton explains. “This space was meant to create a conversation, with its dramatic wall covering and Calacatta Gold pinnacle tile featuring a dimensional cut and honed finish.” Edith Pendant light fixture is by Arteriors, the wall covering is by Phillip Jeffries and the tile is from European Marble & Granite in SLC.
“I had so much fun creating this space,” says Barton, who transformed a bedroom into an animal-foster-care space. She custom designed bunks and cabinets equipped with sleeping cabins for the four-legged guests. Wallpaper from Anthropologie.
The great room’s boldly designed fireplace anchors the wall and performs like a massive piece of modern sculpture faced with richly patterned Breccia Loire marble. “The stone slab is in itself a seductive art piece, and then we added the solid-brass beveled surround to introduce the modern aesthetic we craved,” Barton explains.
At the end of the two-story great room, glass railing opens the space to views of the second-level loft serving as an ultra-chic office. There, bold Zoffany wallpaper showcases enormous metallic-and-cream chrysanthemums.
A Prometheus III Sconce by Alan Mizrahi dresses the bedroom’s two-sided fireplace with a bronze-finished ring of illuminated rock crystal.
In the master bedroom, Barton oriented the white oak flooring diagonally to “relax” the space, she explains.
Rather than framing a vanity mirror with a pair of side sconces, Barton mounted a single wall fixture above the elegantly shaped mirror.
