Japanese Anemone offer a beautiful and easy way to transition your gardens from summer to fall.
I’m a big fan of Japanese Anemones,” says garden designer Rob McFarland, principal of Ward & Child—The Garden Store in SLC. “The plants look lush all summer long and then they bloom as summer moves into fall.” And that’s their magic. While all of your summer blooms are fading and dying back, Japanese Anemones (aka windflowers) are just getting started, offering big, beautiful flowers that are fresh and new.
This beloved perennial flowers for six to eight weeks with two- to three-inch blooms that cluster atop thin stems that sway in the breeze. Colors range from purple and dark pink to bright white. Japanese anemones thrive in full to part sun and love evenly moist, well-drained soil. What’s more, they’re easy to grow, they attract butterflies and are deer and rabbit resistant. So what are you waiting for? If late summer signals your gardens’ end, let Japanese anemones help extend their beauty well into fall.
