We have a new grand dog, a black and white, floppy-eared rescue puppy named Franklin. Perhaps that’s why my thoughts this week turned to pets and the clever ways people use to make pets comfortable in their homes.
Like Franklin, many dogs are trained to sleep in kennels at night. In the opening photograph, the Jaffa Group designed and built kennels set into the wall of the master bedroom for the family dogs. With such a clean installation, there is nothing to trip over in the dark.

Similarly, Capitol Hill Construction installed this recessed dog bed within the cabinetry of a busy home’s working area. In the same mansion remodel, Capitol Hill Construction created an aviary room for the family’s feathered pets while preserving the wonderful tiled floor and art glass.

A doting homeowner furnished a pet cat’s favorite sunning spot with a faux-fur-covered Lucite bench. The cat made another appearance in my photograph of the dining room of the same home.

I just finished tending a friend’s pet chickens, and I can attest to how attached you can get to them. Park City interior designer Jenny Samuelson applied her talents to the design of the coop and house for her pet chickens. Landscaping for the chickens included bright seasonal mums and a straw bale for relaxing. If you have never held a warm relaxed chicken, it’s something to add to the bucket list.

Finally, there are equestrian pets. I have owned and cared for a few horses but never in such an attractive and pleasing environment as this horse barn designed by Salt Lake architect Will Connelly.
