Several blogs ago I tantalized readers when I featured the interiors of a home located in a canyon above Alpine built by Hobble Creek Construction (located in American Fork) and beautifully designed by Upwall Design (Salt Lake City).
I promised more photos to better understand the shape of the home and how the copious windows maintain connections with the striking location. The site is nestled in the Wasatch with views to Utah Lake and a stream crossing the property that is energized by its incarnation as a waterfall just moments before.
The serene public face of the home is in contrast to the open modern forms of the rear. The patios and pool promise lively parties and family fun, and disappearing glass doors connect the outdoors to the kitchen and open living space.
The home is best understood in context with the grounds. In the rear, boulders quickly mark the transition from the patio area to the natural setting. Lighting in the creek adds to its evening enjoyment, and bridges cross the creek leading to trails and semi-secret spots to sit and appreciate the evening.
With its generous glass, this home makes one a part of the outdoors even when inside. The parcel and access are configured for privacy, making this design work without additional screening.
I chose to photograph the exteriors during the evening to fully appreciate the glass, shapes, and how the contours work with those of the mountainside. An additional benefit is to better show the greenhouse and potting shed atop the garage. The disadvantage of night shots is losing the rich verdant feeling of being saturated in nature, as color is somewhat diminished at this time.
