Design Inspiration from the White House

February 7, 2018

For many people, traditional style translates to stuffy rooms, outdated décors and Hail-to-the-Chief rigidity. As we celebrate Presidents’ Day, (and the Presidents’ Day sale at Thomasville of Utah), we’d like to applaud a fresh take on traditional, presidential style.

The dark-stained built-ins in the image above, give anchor this comfortable family room and their dark color disguises the black TV screen when it’s not in use.

Richly colored leather seating is large scaled and ultra-comfortable—no small, heavily patterned pieces here. Lush pillows provide the only punch of pattern needed. Clean-lined paneling and trim frames the room with classic, yet fresh forms.

Layered, generously scaled moldings and paneling gleam under white paint rather than dark stain.

Dark beams contrast with white painted elements to create today’s all-the-rage high-contrast color palette. Pillows and bedding introduce classic plaid and paisley patterns.

White-painted tray ceiling adds visual height and lightness to the room. The spectacular ceiling detail performs like icing on a cake.

The living room’s bleached dark-and-light coffered ceiling, assorted wood tones and a mix of patterned fabrics foster the room’s casual elegance while a large window and light carpet brighten the room.

Pattern is relegated to pillows and cushions, relieving the room of heavy-handed pattern-play. A palette of warm earth-tones provides a comfortable backdrop for the room’s stronger colors. Details including the distinct molding and fireplace design gives the space its own striking look and feel.

Stately built-ins anchor the office in traditional style while large-scale chairs and ottomans infuse the room with comfort and relaxed charm. A tufted leather office chair makes a clear statement of masculine, traditional style. Dark woods and light walls contrast with fresh appeal. The generously scaled paneled fireplace, a peaked beamed ceiling and large furnishings accentuate the room’s traditional style.
